Bit

« Back to Glossary Index

The bit in computing is a contraction of the word binary digit. It represents binary state of only 2 possible values: 1 or 0, true or false, on or off. Bits can be stored on computers through positive and negative charges of electricity. By stringing together  binary digits in any number of ways, for example: 01110001000, computers are able to translate these strings on binary data into information that is meaningful to us. One way to think of a bit is in terms of morse code–where striking an electronic hammer creates a signal. The on/off signal that we come to know as the beeping sound, can be translated into letters, and those letters into words. Working in such a fashion, bits form the base layer of computer data, which are stored, processed and transformed into the array of digital information we receive from all computing devices.
